How we work
RESPECT | OPENNESS | COLLABORATION | RELATIONSHIPS
Our approach
We aim to work in a way that is straightforward, respectful, and focused on long-term impact. We are a signatory to IVAR’s Open and Trusting Grantmaking principles, which underpin how we work with the organisations we support.
We do not accept unsolicited applications. Instead, we proactively identify and build relationships with organisations whose work aligns with our priorities. We develop our funding pipeline through research, scoping work, and conversations with experts, practitioners, partners, grantees, and other funders.
When we identify organisations of interest, we begin with an initial conversation to understand their work, priorities, and funding needs. Where there is strong alignment, we invite a short proposal with clear guidance on the information required and the level of funding available.
We aim to keep our processes proportionate and make funding decisions where there is a strong likelihood of support. On the rare occasions where an invited proposal is not successful, we provide a £250 contribution in recognition of the time involved.
We offer flexible funding, including unrestricted, core, or project support, and may also provide development funding to help shape ideas at an early stage. We typically begin with a one-year grant, with the intention of building longer-term, multi-year partnerships and providing more flexible support over time.
We are committed to transparency. We publish details of our grants through 360Giving and in our annual reports, and we aim to give as much notice as possible when funding is coming to an end.
Our principles
Respect for those working in the sector
We recognise the time and expertise required to apply for funding and keep application and reporting processes proportionate. We only invite proposals where there is a strong likelihood of funding, and our approach is guided by what organisations tell us they need.
Openness
We are transparent about our processes and the likelihood of funding, and we gather anonymous feedback from grantees to help us learn and improve.
Collaboration
We encourage organisations to work together and can support the costs of collaboration. We are also keen to work in partnership with other funders where this can strengthen outcomes.
Relationships matter
We prioritise building long-term, trust-based relationships, with the aim of providing longer-term, more flexible funding over time, including continuation support.
